Chapter 10: Know Yourself and Your Enemy

Brandon had two priorities for the next few days. The first was to focus on the individual gift. To start with, he would spend time trying to recreate the light gift. If he were successful, he would then try for something new, copying Robbie’s gift of illusion or perhaps creating to a new gift that would allow him to stun opponents.

The other priority was Alicia. She was always at the top of his list; he wanted to care for her and enrich her life in whatever way he could.

Brandon discovered that he could recreate the light gift and that it was possible to overwrite your individual gift with a new one. However, it was like trying to retrain your muscles. It would be impossible to switch between different gifts quickly; it took so much focus and concentration to create and embrace a new gift when you already had one.

Brandon spent as much time trying to pamper Alicia as he did developing his abilities and planning for the future. Alicia told him she had never been treated this way before, and she felt lucky to have someone in her life who was so loving and devoted.

During a talk with her, he asked, “Does your gift give you the ability to tell if someone is lying or being deceitful?”

“It does. I feel it so often from many people.”

This gave Brandon an idea. If he could develop the same ability and then meet with the soldier who gave him the offer to join their group, he could discover the truth about them. Brandon opened the envelope the man had given him and learned his name was Antony. He arranged to meet Antony at his former home, since he already knew the place, it was logical.

When Brandon arrived, he scouted the area to ensure that it was safe before entering the house. Antony arrived soon after, and he was alone, so Brandon invited him in, and they sat down together in the living room.

“I would like to start fresh with you.”

“As I’m sure you can appreciate,” began Brandon, “I continue to remain cautious about you and your group.”

Antony nodded. “That’s understandable.”

“You have stated before that you’re not the bad guys, so who are you? What are your objectives? And how come you have people with different rules?”

“Our group is aware that certain individuals exist in this world who have extraordinary abilities. Very little is known about these people or what their intentions are. There’s some disagreement about how this situation should be addressed. Some are wanting to eliminate the threat, while others want more information. So far, these individuals have remained hidden for the most part, and they run anytime they’re approached.”

“Have these people ever demonstrated any hostility or threatened anyone?”

“Not to my knowledge.”

“Have you considered that if one was treated as I was, then they might be afraid of you and your soldiers?”

“You have a valid point.”

“Apologies for my interruption, please continue.”

“Currently everyone in the group has
